Lubin House Alumni Reception

Despite record snowfall in the NYC Metro area, almost 100 alumni and guests were in attendance for the January 27 NYC alumni reception, held in conjunction with the annual NYSBA meeting, at the Lubin House. Dean Hannah Arterian was in attendance, as were members of the College of Law faculty and staff. Award-winning Author to Lead Feb. 25 College of Law Event

Keynote Speaker Sheryll Cashin Explores Legacy of the late Justice Thurgood Marshall

Sheryll CashinSyracuse University College of Law Black Law Students Association (BLSA) has organized a Black History Month program that pays tribute to the legacy of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, who was the first African American member of the Supreme Court. The program, "The Equal Justice: The Life and Legacy of Justice Thurgood Marshall," will be held on Friday, Feb. 25, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., in Grant Auditorium in the SU College of Law. The keynote speaker is award-winning author Sheryll Cashin, who is also a professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. The program is free and open to the public.

SU College of Law places 5th in Regional International Moot Court Competition

International Moot Court CompetitionThe Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the world's largest moot court competition, with participants from over 500 law schools in more than 80 countries.

This year the College of Law team won all four of its preliminary rounds and advanced to the quarterfinals ranked in 5th place above Brooklyn Law School, NYU and Yale, and just below Columbia, Harvard and Cornell. The team lost in a hotly contested match to Columbia, who went on to win the regional competition.

The team's written submissions won an award in the category of Best Memorial. Out of the nearly 100 oralists in the competition, Nina Hong won the top oralist award and Michael Kaplan was ranked 5th.

Dean Arterian and the College of Law will host a series of alumni events this spring, two of which will be held in March. The first event is in San Diego, CA on Monday, March 7 at the University Club. The second event is in Phoenix, AZ at the Capital Grille on Wednesday, March 23. Both events are 12:00 p.m. luncheons and require advanced registration. Please e-mail your R.S.V.P. to SU-Law@law.syr.edu.

Predators, Porn and the Law: America's Children in the Internet Era

When: April 9, 2011

Where: Syracuse University College of Law

From chat rooms to sexting, how do we keep our children safe from online predators? Please join the Syracuse Law Review and the College of Law community for a groundbreaking conference on April 9 which will bring together legal scholars, children's advocates, and law enforcement from across the U.S. for discussions regarding the safety of America's children in the Internet age. Marc Klaas, founder of the KlaasKids Foundation for Children and national advocate for child safety, will be the keynote speaker at the event. Mr. Klaas started his Foundation after the 1993 kidnap, rape, and murder of his 12-year-old daughter.
